In the wake of the coronavirus crisis, the Czech government made two major energy decisions at the end of April. On the one hand, it decided on the completion of a giant nuclear unit in Dukovany, and on the other hand,
it removed solar energy from the sources that will be able to compete in auctions for a bid on the market.
It was as though both decisions had come from the last century. What motivates the government to do this now, when renewables are gaining ground in all developed economies and when, on the contrary, traditional nuclear energy is on the decline? On the one hand, it is understandable that a secure energy supply solution must be sought at a time when fossil fuels are declining. On the other hand, by doing this the state is not only giving up on market solutions, but it is making things more expensive rather saving money in the future.
